Heated Hoses

Heated hoses are used in a large variety of liquid / media transfer applications. Within the plastics industry have become more widely used with co-extruders. They can be fitted in minutes, and save valuable time when mating one extruder to another. They are particularly useful when a smaller extruder is used to connect to multiple extruders.

Heated Hoses – How They're Made

Heating Condcutors (Element)

A precision resistance heating element is spirally wound around the stainless steel pressure braid of the hose. The heating element is then enclosed within a layer of high-temperature glass fibre insulation. A nickel-plated copper braid is applied over this insulation, providing both electrical screening and a continuous protective earth for enhanced safety.

Temperature Sensor

The temperature sensor is positioned in direct contact with the stainless steel pressure braid beneath the heating element, allowing accurate monitoring of the hose temperature. The standard sensor is a Type J (Fe-CuNi) thermocouple, with alternative sensor options including Type K (NiCr-Ni) and PT100 RTD available upon request.

Thermal Insulation

Multiple layers of high-temperature glass fibre insulation surround both the heating element and temperature sensor to minimise heat loss. This is covered with a silicone foam insulating layer, providing excellent thermal efficiency while maintaining a lower external surface temperature for a safer, warm-to-touch finish that helps reduce the risk of operator burns.

Outer Protective Braiding (cover)

The insulated hose assembly is protected by a durable polyamide braided sleeve, offering excellent resistance to abrasion, scuffing and general wear. For demanding industrial environments, an additional stainless steel overbraid can be specified for increased mechanical protection.

Hose End Caps

Bonded ends to contain the hose construction.  Typically one end will include the heating element termination into the connection cable with the optional temperature sensor cables included.

Electrical Connections

As standard, heated hoses are supplied with a 1.5 m connection cable terminated with an optional standard 7-pin DIN plug.

The pin configuration is as follows:

  • Pins 1 & 2: Single-phase supply
  • Pins 3 & 4: Neutral
  • Pins 5 & 6: Thermocouple connection
  • Pin 7 (centre): Protective earth

Matching panel-mounted sockets are available, allowing quick and reliable connection to compatible temperature controllers or spare machine heating zones.

Connection Fittings (each end)

A wide range of end fittings is available to suit different applications. Standard thread options include BSP and metric connections, with additional thread types available on request.

What is a heated hose?

A heated hose is a flexible, electrically heated transfer hose designed to maintain the temperature of molten plastics, adhesives, waxes, bitumen, food products and other temperature-sensitive materials during transfer. Internal heating elements and thermal insulation minimise heat loss while ensuring a consistent material temperature throughout the hose length. They help maintain product quality by preventing materials from cooling or solidifying during transfer.

What are heated hoses used for?

Do heated hoses include temperature sensors?

Yes. Heated hoses can be supplied with integrated thermocouples or RTD temperature sensors, allowing precise monitoring and control of the hose temperature using your existing controller.

What insulation is used in a heated hose?

Industrial heated hoses typically incorporate multiple layers including high-temperature thermal insulation and an outer protective braided covering. This construction helps reduce heat loss, improve energy efficiency and protect operators from excessive surface temperatures.

Can heated hoses replace original OEM hoses?

In most cases, yes. Soloheat can manufacture replacement heated hoses compatible with many OEM systems. We can often reproduce hose length, fittings, electrical connections and temperature sensing arrangements from an existing sample or drawing.

What electrical connections are available?

Heated hoses can be supplied with a wide range of industrial connectors including:

How long do heated hoses last?

Service life depends on operating temperature, installation, bend radius and the material being transferred. Correct installation, avoiding excessive bending and regular inspection will significantly extend hose life.

Can damaged heated hoses be repaired?

Some external fittings or electrical connections may be repairable, depending on the condition of the hose. However, if the heating element or internal construction has failed, replacement is often the safest and most reliable solution.

What information is required when ordering a heated hose?

To manufacture a replacement heated hose we normally require:

  • Overall hose length
  • Internal bore size
  • Operating temperature
  • Supply voltage
  • Wattage (if known – we can advise if not known)
  • Connection fitting size / thread type (each end)
