Ceramic Knuckle Heaters UK | Ceramic Band & Extruder Barrel Heater Manufacturer

Soloheat manufacture bespoke Ceramic Knuckle Heaters, also commonly referred to as knuckle band heaters, ceramic band heaters or extruder barrel heaters, for high-temperature plastics processing and industrial heating applications.

Ceramic Knuckle Heater Features

Manufactured in the UK, Soloheat ceramic knuckle heaters are produced to customer specifications for OEM machinery manufacturers, maintenance contractors and end users worldwide. Heaters can be manufactured from customer drawings, sketches, samples or existing heater references to ensure accurate replacement or performance upgrades.

  • Potential power density greater than other types of band heater.
  • Highest application temperatures available > 760oC / 1400oF
  • Recommended continual use > 300oC / 572oF
  • Minimum / Maximum diameter = 60mm id / 1500mm id
  • Minimum / Maximum width: 20mm / 450mm
  • Maximum Power density = <40 watts / inch² (6.2w/cm²)

Typical Industries and Applications

In addition to plastics extrusion and injection moulding equipment, ceramic knuckle heaters are widely used throughout the packaging, pharmaceutical, petrochemical and food processing industries. They are commonly installed on dies, transfer pipes, tanks, hoppers, blow moulding equipment and specialist process machinery where accurate high-temperature control is required. Their robust construction makes them suitable for demanding industrial environments and continuous operation.

How Ceramic Knuckle Heaters Work

Optional Insulation Jackets

Soloheat high temperature ceramic knuckle heaters can be supplied with bespoke high-temperature insulation jackets to improve efficiency and operator safety. Insulation jackets reduce radiant heat losses, minimise surface temperatures and can significantly reduce the risk of accidental burns to machine operators. They also help protect heaters from contamination caused by plastic drool and process residues.

Learn more about our Insulation jackets here.

Ceramic knuckle heaters utilise nickel-chromium resistance wire embedded within interlocking ceramic insulation blocks and enclosed within a durable stainless steel outer sheath. Unlike conventional mica band heaters, ceramic heaters transfer energy through a combination of conductive and radiant heat transfer, producing more uniform barrel temperatures and reducing localised hot spots. This makes them particularly suitable for precision plastics processing applications where stable temperatures directly influence product quality and process consistency.

Energy Efficiency and Reduced Heat Loss

Ceramic high temperature heaters can offer improved thermal efficiency compared with traditional mica heaters, particularly when fitted with external insulation jackets. Reduced heat loss to the surrounding environment can improve machine warm-up times, reduce temperature cycling and lower energy consumption. The result is improved process stability and potentially lower operating costs over the lifetime of the equipment.

Custom Manufacturing Options

Every application is different, which is why Soloheat manufactures ceramic knuckle heater bands to customer specifications. Units can be supplied in single-piece, split or multi-segment configurations and can incorporate holes, cut-outs, thermocouple locations and special mounting arrangements to suit existing machinery. A range of electrical terminations, voltages and single, dual or three-phase options are available to ensure seamless integration with OEM equipment and retrofit installations.

Ceramic Knuckle Heater delivery lead time

Typical lead time for Ceramic Knuckle Heaters is 3 – 5 days for small items, 7 -10 days for more complex units. We confirm manufacturing lead times at the time of quotation.

Why use Ceramic Knuckle Heaters?

Ceramic knuckle heaters are typically selected where higher operating temperatures, improved durability and increased power densities are required. Compared with traditional mica band heaters, ceramic heaters are capable of operating at significantly higher temperatures and can provide improved heat distribution around extruder barrels and tooling. This makes them particularly suitable for demanding plastics processing applications and continuous production environments.
