Mica heater features:

  • Lower cost than other types of surface heater.
  • Highest application temperatures available > 300oC / 572oF
  • Minimum / Maximum diameter = 60mm id / 1500mm id
  • Minimum / Maximum width: 20mm / 450mm
  • Maximum Power density = <25 watts / inch² (3.875w/cm²)

How Mica heaters work

Mica heaters consist of a nickel-chromium resistance element encapsulated between layers of high-grade mica insulation and enclosed within a durable stainless steel sheath. The mica provides excellent electrical insulation while allowing efficient transfer of heat to the heated component. Their compact construction makes mica heaters particularly suitable where installation space is limited and fast, uniform surface heating is required.

Use Mica Heaters for:

This heater type is suitable for low to medium temperature applications, suitable for general purpose heating for extruder / injection moulding machine barrels and dies, co-extruders, material transfer pipes and a multitude of other low to medium heat applications.

They are ideal for heating applications where space is limited, and can be made as plates (in a multitude of shapes), wrap around bands in one, two or more segments, or as L and U shapes. We can also fit with backing / clamp plates in order to ensure a tight fit.

Mica heaters are suitable for continual use < 250oC / 482oF occasional use <300oC / 572oF

Industries using industrial Mica Heaters

Our custom mica heaters are supplied to customers within the plastics processing, packaging, food production, pharmaceutical, automotive and general manufacturing industries. They are suitable for both original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) applications requiring dependable and repeatable process heating.

Mica Heater Terminations

Mica heaters are commonly fitted with terminal box, plug or leads. Other options are available according to client requirements. They can be manufactured as single, dual or three phase heaters.

Lead time

Typical lead time for Mica heaters is 2 – 3 days for small items, 5 – 7 days for more complex units. We confirm manufacturing lead times at the time of quotation.

Mica Heater FAQ's

What is the maximum operating temperature of a mica heater?

> 300oC / 572oF

What is the difference between mica and ceramic band heaters?

Materials used – mica components are lighter duty to enable a greater level of flexibity for design & fitting.

Can mica heaters be manufactured from an existing sample?

Yes, we can reverse engineer from customer samples, or manufacture from drawings / design spec sheets – click here for our survey sheet list

Can thermocouples be incorporated into mica heaters?

Yes, we can locate hot junctions in or around the termination area.  Alternatively, we can fit holes & threaded bosses to accept customers standard thermocouple adaptors.

Can insulation jackets be fitted around / on mica heaters?

We can manufacture high temperature insulation jackets to fit onto new, or existing mica heaters. These jackets are particularly effective when fitting to Injection moulding barrel heaters & extruder barrel heaters –  Click here to find out more.

If you need more heat?

Mica heaters are generally recommended for applications operating below approximately 300°C where compact size and cost-effectiveness are priorities. Their thin construction allows installation where larger ceramic heaters may not be suitable.

For higher operating temperatures, increased power densities or more demanding continuous-duty applications, ceramic knuckle heaters may provide a more suitable solution. Our technical team can advise on the most appropriate heater type for your process and operating conditions.

Where improved energy efficiency is required, mica heaters can be supplied with our bespoke insulation jackets to reduce radiant heat losses, improve operator safety and reduce energy consumption.
